Routine breast care is critical for finding breast cancer early. Women should know how their breasts normally look and feel so if unusual changes occur you can see your provider immediately. Doing a monthly self-breast exam is important, but it should be combined with regular physical exams by a doctor and a mammogram. At Progress West Hospital patients have access to mammograms, breast cancer diagnosis and treatment plans.

Abnormal changes to your breasts
Contact your primary care physician immediately if you notice unusual changes in your breast(s), this may include a lump, change in the size/shape of your breast, fluid from the nipple that is not breast milk or unusual (itching, redness, darkening, scaling, swelling, dimples) skin changes that do not go away.

Free Breast Health Services for Uninsured Women
Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital provides free breast cancer screenings to Missouri women who meet certain age, income and insurance guidelines through the
Show Me Healthy Women program. Qualifying participants are eligible to receive:
- Breast exam by a health care provider
- Instructions on how to do a breast self-exam
- Mammograms, depending on age and risk factors
- Diagnostic services as deemed necessary
Women 50 to 64 or older (if not eligible for Medicare Part B) may be eligible for free:
- Clinical breast exams
- Mammograms and diagnostic services
Women 35 to 49 may be eligible for breast exams by a health care provider if there are no other services available and diagnostic services with breast screenings that are suspicious for cancer.
